Auckland Interprovincial Team 2023

Following on from the success of 2022, the ARA will be sending an Auckland Regional Team to represent the region at the Interprovincial Championships in Twizel on 23rd September 2023!

The ARA will be sending an Open Squad of 8 women and 8 men + coxswains, which will consist of a minimum of 4 Under-20 women and 4 Under-20 men as per the race conditions. We will also send a Light Blues (year 12) squad in a development capacity.

It is our understanding that all Associations are sending a squad to compete at these Interprovincial Championships.

Who can nominate?

The ARA is keen to send the best possible crews to represent our region. As such, we encourage any and all Auckland athletes who are year 13 and over to nominate. Athletes in NZ teams can also nominate and we would very much encourage them to do so (note that, as per Rowing NZ, athletes involved in Under-23, Elite Development Squad or Elite teams are not able to race for their region at the Interprovincial Championships).

Note that the nomination form is on the right-hand side of this page and are due by Sunday 23rd July 2023.

As this team will be representing our region, it is understood that you will be of reasonable fitness and able to attend the on-water trial (if invited) and commit to approximately 4-weeks of training leading into the Interprovincial Championship regatta.

Light Blues athletes do not need to nominate as they are being assessed and selected through their Light Blues Winter Programme.

The Selection Process

Once nominations close, the ARA Selection Panel will review nominees and invite a number of athletes to attend an on-water trial. This on-water trial will take place on Saturday 19th August 2023 at West End RC (full details will be circulated to invited athletes ahead of time).

The Interprovincial Campaign

Once crews have been selected, the ARA and coaches will work with athletes to develop an accommodating and effective training programme. As this is a regional team, it is expected that this campaign takes precedence over other training – we will work with your Club coaches to ensure everyone is on the same page and will provide support where necessary.

We understand that most athletes will have non-rowing commitments they need to adhere to (school exams, university, work etc) so we will work with you in regard to training. However, as you will be representing the region, a high-level commitment and willingness to prepare is expected of the full team.
