Auckland Interprovincial Team 2024
Following on from the success over the past couple of years, the ARA will be sending an Auckland Regional Team to represent the region at the North Island Interprovincial Championships at Lake Karapiro on Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September 2024!
As this regatta is being held on our doorstep (Lake Karapiro), the ARA is keen to support a large Open & U20 Squad to compete, so we encourage you to nominate!
We will also send a Light Blues (year 12) squad in a development capacity.
Who can nominate?
The ARA is keen to send the best possible crews to represent our region. As such, we encourage any and all Auckland athletes who are year 13 and over to nominate. Athletes in NZ teams can also nominate and we would very much encourage them to do so.
Note that the nomination form is on the top right-hand side of this page and are due by Sunday 28th July 2024.
As this team will be representing our region, it is understood that you will be of reasonable fitness and able to commit to training through August and September leading into the North Island Interprovincial Championships.
Light Blues athletes do not need to nominate as they are being assessed and selected through their Light Blues Winter Programme.
The Selection Process
As mentioned above, we are keen to send a large squad which means we want to send multiple crews (more than just one women’s and one men’s crew). Depending on where athletes are based, athletes will train locally with squad sessions occurring periodically. Athlete data will be collected throughout the campaign with final selections being made ahead of the North Island Interprovincial Championships itself. The intention is to send as many athletes to this regatta as practical.
We will also be providing support to athletes who are aspiring to make the summer RNZ Pathway by completing the 5km erg test in August and 2km erg test in September 2024.
The Interprovincial Campaign
Once the squad has been formed, the ARA and coaches will work with athletes to develop an accommodating and effective training programme.
As this is a regional team, it is expected that this campaign takes precedence over other training – we will work with your Club coaches to ensure everyone is on the same page and will provide support where necessary. We will also work with Clubs and do everything we can to link into their training programme to provide a more seamless transition.
We understand that most athletes will have non-rowing commitments they need to adhere to (school exams, university, work etc) so we will work with you in regard to training. However, as you will be representing the region, a high-level commitment and willingness to prepare is expected of the full team.
